Intended Use
Last updated: July 1, 2026 · Version 1.1
In one line: Carbetic is a general wellness app that gives estimated carb information. It is not a medical device, and it must never be used to make medical or treatment decisions, including dosing insulin.
1. What Carbetic is for
Carbetic is a consumer wellness, fitness and educational app. It uses artificial intelligence to produce approximate estimates of the carbohydrate, fat, protein, FPU, calories and fibre content of food and recipes from photos, scans, links, text, or voice descriptions. It is intended to help people learn about and keep informal track of the estimated carb content of meals, for general informational and lifestyle purposes only.
2. What Carbetic is NOT
Carbetic is not a medical device and is not intended to:
- diagnose, treat, cure, prevent, monitor, or mitigate any disease or health condition;
- calculate, recommend, or inform insulin or medication dosing;
- replace blood-glucose monitoring, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), laboratory testing, or any clinical measurement;
- provide medical advice, professional nutritional therapy, or a substitute for the judgment of a qualified healthcare professional.
Carbetic gives estimates, never precise calculations. Every output is an AI-generated approximation, not a measurement. Estimates vary with photo quality, portion size, recipe accuracy, and how well a food is represented in nutritional data, and they can, and will generally, be inaccurate.
3. Who it is for
Carbetic is intended for general consumers aged 16 and older who want informal, estimated carbohydrate information. It is not intended for clinicians to manage patients, and it is not intended to be the basis of any clinical or treatment decision. Younger users should only use Carbetic with the involvement of a parent or guardian.
4. How to use Carbetic's estimates safely
Do use Carbetic to get a rough, educational sense of the nutritional information of a meal, and to learn about the foods you eat.
Do not:
- use a Carbetic estimate to decide an insulin or medication dose;
- treat an estimate as an exact or verified figure;
- rely on Carbetic instead of your glucose meter, CGM, or care plan;
- use Carbetic as your only source of nutritional information for any health decision.
Always confirm carbohydrate and nutrition information with, and follow the guidance of, your physician, diabetes educator, or other qualified healthcare professional. Decisions about diet, medication, and insulin are medical decisions that must be made with a professional.
5. Critical safety notice
If you have diabetes or any other health condition, an inaccurate carb estimate could contribute to a dangerous dosing error if you (wrongly) used it for that purpose. Never use Carbetic for dosing or treatment decisions. This is the single most important limit on how Carbetic may be used.
6. Regulatory status
Carbetic has not been reviewed, cleared, certified, or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency, any Notified Body under the EU Medical Device Regulation, or any other regulatory authority, for any medical purpose. Carbetic is offered as a general wellness product and is not intended to have a medical purpose within the meaning of the EU Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745 or Section 201(h) of the U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
7. No professional relationship
Using Carbetic does not create a doctor-patient, dietitian-client, or any other professional-care relationship between you and Carbetic or its operator.
8. Emergencies
Carbetic is not for emergencies. If you think you are having a medical emergency (for example, severe hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia), contact your local emergency number immediately.
9. Related documents
This Intended Use statement supplements, and should be read together with, the Carbetic Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Where there is any conflict about the medical or safety scope of the app, the more protective limitation applies.
