Checking a criminal-record certificate
A criminal-record certificate is one more way to get to know a sitter. Carbetic does not check, collect or show certificates, so this happens between you, in person.
In short
- “ID verified” does not include a criminal-record check.
- Austria: Strafregisterbescheinigung Kinder- und Jugendfürsorge. Germany: erweitertes Führungszeugnis.
- The family asks in writing, and the sitter applies.
- Look at the certificate together in person. Never send it through the chat.
What Carbetic does and does not do
“ID verified” means that a person's ID document is genuine and matched their live selfie. It does not include any check of criminal records.
There is no upload and no badge for certificates. Please do not send a certificate to us, and never send one through the chat, not even as a photo.
Austria: Strafregisterbescheinigung Kinder- und Jugendfürsorge
This certificate shows convictions for sexual offences and bans on working with children.
- The family fills in and signs a confirmation that names the sitter. Blank or general forms are refused.
- Ask the office first. Whether a private family can sign this confirmation is not clearly regulated. Check with the registration office before the sitter applies.
- The sitter applies in person at a registration office (Meldebehörde), for example the municipal office (Gemeindeamt) or the Magistrat, with photo ID and the confirmation. It cannot be requested online.
- The fee is about €29.
More information: oesterreich.gv.at, search for “Strafregisterbescheinigung”.
Germany: erweitertes Führungszeugnis
The extended certificate of conduct shows convictions that matter for work with children.
- The family writes a short request saying that the certificate is needed for looking after children.
- The sitter applies at the local registration office (Bürgeramt), or online at the Federal Office of Justice with the online ID function.
- The fee is about €13. The certificate is sent to the sitter by post.
More information: bundesjustizamt.de, search for “Führungszeugnis”.
Other countries
Most EU countries have a similar certificate for work with children. Ask your town hall, the police or the national justice ministry how to get one.
Looking at it together
- Ask the sitter to bring the certificate to a meeting, and look at it together.
- Check that the name matches the ID the sitter shows you.
- Look at the date. Many people ask for a certificate that is no older than 3 months.
- Talk about it early, so the sitter has enough time to apply.
For sitters: being asked is a good sign. It shows that the family is careful, which is exactly what you would want in their place.
Fees and procedures can change. Please check the official pages before you apply.
