Typing indicator and read receipts
What the dots and the small status under your messages mean, and how to turn read receipts off.
The typing indicator
When the other person is typing, three dots appear at the bottom of the chat, next to their photo. They disappear when the message arrives or when the person stops typing.
The typing indicator is always on. It never shows what someone is typing.
What the status under your message means
- Sending: your phone is sending the message.
- Waiting for network: you're offline. The message goes out as soon as you're connected again.
- Sent: the message has reached our server.
- Delivered: the message has reached the other person's app.
- Read with a time: the other person has opened the chat. You see this only when both of you have read receipts on.
- Checking photo: your photo is being checked before it's delivered.
- Not delivered or Photo not sent: something went wrong. Tap the message to see why and what you can do.
The status appears under your last message. Tap any message to see its time and status.
Delivered can take a moment
On an iPhone, a message sometimes shows Delivered only once the other person opens the app. That's normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong.
Turn read receipts off
- Open the Profile tab.
- Under Chat, turn off Read receipts.
Read receipts work both ways. If you turn them off, others don't see when you've read their messages, and you don't see when they've read yours. You still see Delivered.
Your privacy
Nobody at Carbetic reads your messages, and we don't analyse what they say. The only automatic check is a fixed pattern check when you send a message. It blocks phone numbers, email addresses and messenger links and stores nothing (why). Messages are encrypted in transit and when stored, but not end to end. Our safety team sees messages only when someone in the conversation reports them or reports the other person, or when the law requires it. Every such access is logged.
