T1D Babysitting HelpGetting started

How it works for sitters

Babysit for families of children with type 1 diabetes. It is free for sitters, from the ID check to every message.

  1. Free for sitters

    Sitters never pay anything. Not for the profile, not for the ID check and not for messages. You can start conversations with families and reply to them for free.

  2. Check that you can join

    You need to be at least 16 and have experience with diabetes. Your profile asks “What experience do you have with diabetes?”, and you choose at least one answer:

    • I have diabetes myself;
    • my partner has diabetes;
    • my best friend has diabetes;
    • someone in my family has diabetes;
    • something else, in a few words of your own.

    If you are 16 or 17, you confirm with one tick that a parent or guardian agrees. Who can join explains the details.

  3. Create your account

    In the network, switch to Babysit and start your sitter profile. You sign in with Apple, Google or your email address and enter your first and last name and your birth month and year.

    Your last name is stored privately. Your profile shows your first name and the first letter of your last name, for example “Lena M.”. Adults can choose whether to show their age.

  4. Build your profile

    Show families what you know:

    • your answer to “What experience do you have with diabetes?”;
    • the devices you are familiar with, such as pens, pumps, closed loop systems, CGMs or hypo treatment, shown as Self-declared;
    • up to 6 photos, with you on the first one;
    • your languages and hobbies;
    • an hourly rate or an overnight rate, if you want to show one.

    If you choose “I have diabetes myself”, you decide whether to show it. That needs your explicit consent, and you can hide it again at any time. Please do not promise medical tasks in your profile. Before your profile is saved, you tick “I agree” to accept the network terms and the community guidelines.

  5. Your area, not your address

    You type your address once. We turn it into an approximate area of about 2 km, shown as a soft circle on the map, and never store your street or house number. You can choose a larger area or show only your town. Families see distances only in bands, never in exact kilometres.

  6. Go live and find families

    Your profile is checked automatically and usually goes live within a minute. If something needs a change, the app tells you what. You don't need the ID check for this.

    Everyone who has published a profile can see your sitter profile and its photos. Nothing is blurred. You can pause your profile at any time, and your chats continue.

  7. Verify your ID to send messages

    To message families, you verify your identity with our partner Didit, using your ID document and a live selfie. It is free and takes a few minutes.

    Your profile then shows ID verified, with your first name and the first letter of your last name from your ID, and you can message families in Babysit mode.

  8. Meet with care

    Every new chat shows a short safety note. Phone numbers and other contact details can't be sent in the chat, so swap numbers in person. Meet the family first and ask exactly what they expect from you. Never pay or accept money in advance.

    Only do what the family and its diabetes team have taught and allowed you to do. You can say no to any task. If you are unsure, call the parents. If the child is unwell and you cannot reach them, call your local emergency number.

  9. Reviews and reporting

    Once you have both written at least one message in a chat, you can review each other. Families review sitters and sitters review families. Reviews appear once a profile has 4 or more reviews. Reviews are from people who messaged each other on Carbetic. We don't check whether they met.

    You can report or block anyone, from any screen. A person reviews every report, normally within 24 hours. You can also reach us at safety@carbetic.app.
